Abstract

This article examines attitudes toward the study of history in
Turkestan at the beginning of the twentieth century, as reflected in
historical works and articles of historiographical significance, as well as
in the scientific and theoretical views of historians. Analytical attention
is given to the historical schools of Kokand, Tashkent, Bukhara and
Khorezm, which emerged in the second half of the nineteenth and the early
twentieth centuries, their role in the development of historical studies
and the continuity of historiographical traditions in Turkestan during this
period. The article also considers the works and scholarly views of major
Jadid figures, historians, writers and enlightened intellectuals including
Mahmudhoja Behbudiy, Munavvarqori Abdurashidkhanov, Abdurauf
Fitrat, Muhammad Yusuf Bayani, Ishaqkhan Ibrat, Mahdumhoja, Hoji
Muin, Vadud Mahmud, and Musa Saidjonov. Their contributions to
the understanding of history and historical consciousness are briefly
analyzed.
