Abstract

This article investigates the linguistic and speech characteristics
of substandard vocabulary in Uzbek literature, highlighting its linguisticcultural,
sociological aspects, and translation challenges. The theoretical
and scientific approaches of both Western and Eastern linguists on this
issue are critically analyzed. The study employs various methodologies,
including comparative analysis (in the context of English and Uzbek
languages), typological method (based on characterological features),
descriptive method (using tables), distributive analysis (through
the expression of specific substandard units in literary discourse),
statistical analysis method (quantitative assessment of lexical units), and
translatological approach (translation techniques]. The results of the study,
based on examples from Gafur Gulom’s novella “Shum bola” (The Rascal or
Naughty boy), demonstrate the use of substandard lexical units in literary
discourse and their reflection in the translation process into non-related
languages, particularly in the linguistic and cultural context. In conclusion,
the following key findings were reached: 1) The presence of substandard
lexical units in literary discourse was thoroughly analyzed, and their
importance in communication was elucidated; 2) it was determined that
the literal translation method of substandard terms from Uzbek to English
is not always the most effective for translators, as it may create difficulties
in conveying the intended meaning; 3) the analog and adequate translation
methods were found to be more successful in translating substandard
units, particularly when these methods are applied in accordance with
cultural and linguistic contexts, enhancing the overall effectiveness
