After gaining independence in Azerbaijan, the field of translation
has gradually developed. While the number of translations from other
languages into Azerbaijan language has increased, the number of translations
from Azerbaijan language into other languages has also increased.
This increase is an important tool for introducing the traditions and
customs of our people to other peoples and at the same time introducing
the culture of other peoples to Azerbaijani readers. At the same time,
translations enrich the vocabulary of Azerbaijani language. It enables new
words, idioms or proverbs to enter our language. Translators face some
difficulties while translating these words into our language. One of these
difficulties is the problem of translating cultural words, i.e. realias, which
reflect cultural values. There are special cultural words belonging to each
language. Cultural words are words that are unique to the language they
belong to, belong to its character and national identity. Such lexical units
reflect the national characteristics of the language to which they belong. Cultural words cannot be translated into other languages. Some words
used in folk poems reflecting national folklore, personal names, religious
words, food names, words indicating the names of currencies, various
military titles belong to cultural words reflecting social values and are
called realias in English. In the article the problems of translation of cultural
words peculiar to Azerbaijan language and English are investigated,
correct solutions and suggestions are shown.
