Abstract

This study focuses on examining the moral philosophy of Hacı Bektaş
Veli, one of the most significant figures in the Anatolian Sufi tradition,
within its historical, social and cultural context. The XIIIth-century Anatolia
was a period plagued by Mongol invasions, political fragmentation and
sectarian conflicts. In this chaotic environment, Sufi structures emerged
as both spiritual and social refuges for the people, and among them, the
teachings of Hacı Bektaş Veli deeply resonated within society, leaving lasting
impressions.
The first section of the article explores the social, political and
cultural conditions of the period in which Hacı Bektaş Veli lived and outlines
the main characteristics of the Anatolian Sufi tradition. It then details
Hacı Bektaş Veli’s arrival in Anatolia, his relationships with the people
and his approach based on tolerance and equality. His perspective, which
advocated gender equality and respected human beings regardless of
religion, language, or ethnicity, stands as an important ethical model both
for his time and the modern world.
The third section focuses on the formation and development
of the Bektashi tradition, examining how Hacı Bektaş Veli’s thoughts
evolved into a systematic order and the moral principles underpinning
this structure. Love for humanity, humility, justice, honesty and brotherhood
are the cornerstones of the moral framework within Bektashism. The
fourth and fifth sections analyze the sources of Hacı Bektaş Veli’s moral
and Sufi ideas, based on his works and oral traditions, emphasizing his commitment to values such as love, compassion, justice and free thought.
The final section discusses the contemporary reflections of Hacı
Bektaş Veli’s moral philosophy, evaluating its significance in modern society
in terms of human rights, social equality, tolerance, and religious
pluralism. The study aims to shed light on the ethical aspect of Anatolian
Sufism and to remind modern humanity of Hacı Bektaş Veli’s universal values.
