Islam spread via the travels of the Companions and conquest
movements. It is noteworthy that the majority of Companions died outside
of Arabia. When we look at the past, we can see that important companions
took place in the strategic and global conquest movements. Two pioneer
exemplary companions, known for their closeness to Prophet (PBUH),
participated in the conquest and siege of two cities; this became the focus
of the developments which changed the flow of the history.
Qutham ibn Abbas (RA) was the son of Abbas (RA) who was the
uncle of Prophet (PBUH); he was very close to our Prophet. He was the
hajj emir and the governor of Mecca and for a short time the governor of
Medina during the time of Ali (RA) and he was from the immigrants. In
the Umayyad period, he participated to Khorasan expedition and he was
martyred in the conquest of Samarkand.
Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (RA) hosted Hz. Prophet (PBUH) in his
house when He immigrated to Medina and he was also His relative. He
participated to all of the expeditions during Hz. Prophet (PBUH) period
and he was his bodyguard. He also participated to some expeditions during
four caliphs; Hz. Ali (RA) once left him in Medina as deputy. He died in the
siege of Istanbul and he was from ansar.
The article examines the shared characteristics of these two
Companions, particularly their close association with the Prophet
Muhammad (peace be upon him) and the Rightly Guided Caliphs, their services during the period of Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him),
as well as their participation in the military campaigns of conquest during
the Umayyad era. Furthermore, the cities of Samarkand and Istanbul
are characterized as possessing significant geostrategic and geopolitical
features, and are described as cities that played a leading role in global
processes of growth and transformation from the perspective of Islamic
civilization and Muslim-Turkic states.
